Here’s an update on where we are with the different components of our
Lilly sabbatical.
San Diego, our marriage retreat and restful touristy activities are a
pleasant but distant memory. Here are two pics we took at the zoo – one
indicates Lilly’s ubiquitous philanthropy, the other is just a great photo of
one of our friends.
The floral design class is complete. One of our assignments was to
create a “Dutch Master” type arrangement, heavy on the top, with lots of color
and arranged disarray. Here is Deb’s interpretation.
We’re really looking forward to a long Labor Day weekend with children
and grandchildren, spouses and friends. We’ll be staying at a friends’ place in
Hidden Valley and will be going to Idlewild, Soakzone and Caddieshack. When not
traveling about we’ll be spending time relaxing, cooking in and out, playing
games, and enjoying Leah’s magic show which is already rehearsed and on the
schedule.
Dog training continues, with mixed results. The primary impediment seems
to be the human rather than the dog. But we carry on.
Reading is every day. I recommend Timothy and Kathy Keller’s “The
Meaning of Marriage,” “Sacred Marriage” by Gary Thomas, “The Intimacy Factor”
by Pia Mellody, “Conjugal Spirituality” by Mary Anne McPherson Oliver and
“Marriage: Dead or Alive” by Guggenbuhl-Craig. These include quite a variety of
approaches, including an evangelical pastor, an addiction counselor and a
Jungian psychotherapist. Variety is indeed the spice of life.
Shortly after Labor Day we head off to jolly old England for two weeks.
Will write more later on that. ‘Till then, keep calm and carry on!
